The study of international relations, particularly the realist school of thought, is interested in determining the balance of powers within an anarchic global system. I’ll examine the transitions from one type of system to another, what they bring, and identify precursors.

Shifting; The balance of powers is volatile and changes faster than usual, change is measured over the course of years.

Multi-Polar: No dominant power, alliances of convenience.

Bi-Polar: 2 Dominant powers, spheres of influence
A<2B and A+B =/> 0.5 W

Uni-polar: Hegemon, a single dominant power eclipses all others.
